2. Plastic waste monitoring in Chao Phraya River

The Ocean Cleanup’s Interceptor 019

The Ocean Cleanup’s Interceptor 019 is a solar-powered, autonomous trash collection system deployed in Bangkok’s Chao Phraya River. It is a collaborative project between The Ocean Cleanup and various Thai government agencies and organizations to tackle plastic pollution in the river and prevent it from reaching the ocean. Interceptor 019 is strategically located in a key area where numerous canals converge and contribute to plastic debris in the river. It not only collects waste but also gathers data on plastic pollution for further research and solutions. This deployment marks a significant step in Thailand’s fight against plastic pollution and the global effort to protect the marine environment.

pLitter CCTV by GIC-AIT

Plastic waste in waterways poses a serious threat to Thailand’s ecosystems, especially during floods when it’s carried out to sea. Effective monitoring and collection are crucial. Technological solutions, such as AI-powered image analysis and the pLitter CCTV system, are being developed to identify and track plastic debris in rivers. These tools aim to improve waste management and prevent marine plastic pollution. Organizations like the Geoinformatics Center and Mahidol University are working with UNEP to implement and train stakeholders on these technologies, fostering collaboration to address this critical environmental issue.
