ASEAN countries are experiencing significant economic growth and urbanization, leading to increased consumption and subsequent waste generation. However, many nations struggle with inadequate waste management infrastructure, fragmented regulatory frameworks, and limited public awareness. EPR is a pivotal policy approach that assigns producers the responsibility for the entire lifecycle of their products, particularly focusing on their end-of-life disposal. In the dynamic and rapidly developing ASEAN region, the implementation of EPR is crucial for fostering sustainable growth and environmental stewardship.
This session is designed to bridge these gaps by equipping policymakers, businesses, and community leaders with the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively implement EPR. Throughout this session, participants will delve into the status quo of EPR implementation in the ASEAN region, highlight best practices, and provide practical guidance on policy formulation and enforcement. The goal is to foster a collaborative environment where experiences and strategies can be shared, leading to the development of harmonized EPR policies across the ASEAN region. By doing so, cross-border cooperation can be enhanced, and ultimately, environmental impact reduced.
This session aims to:
- Get an overview of the status of EPR development in the ASEAN region
- Highlight specific gaps in selected ASEAN countries regarding EPR implementation
- Discuss the challenges and possible solutions with relevant stakeholders, including representatives from PROs, the private sector, and the informal waste sector
