The world produces 400 million tonnes of plastic waste each year – with only less than 10 per cent going through recycling, a significant amount of waste is lost to the environment, which make their way to the ocean through rivers, lakes and municipal waterways (UNEP).
Addressing the plastic pollution crisis requires localized strategies, with cities at the forefront of tackling waste. This session will highlight effective tools, strategies and the environmental, social and economic benefits of addressing plastic pollution at the municipal and cities level.
This session aims to:
- Demonstrate effective contributions of urban actors (local governments, social enterprises, and civil society organizations) in strategizing project implementation, forging partnerships, utilization of tools and forwarding policy advocacy in plugging plastic leakage
- Raise and link local actions to the global discussions on circularity, EPR, financing, marine litter, and the plastic treaty
- Develop recommendations for replication and upscaling based on learnt successes and challenges of these initiatives
