Plenary session 2: Life cycle approaches to sustainability

Life Cycle approaches to sustainability are crucial to address the plastic pollution crisis, as highlighted in UN Environment Resolutions 4/9 and 5/14. This requires a broader understanding of plastic’s potential environmental, economic and social impacts in every stage of its life cycle, from raw materials through production to consumption and until it becomes waste. By evaluating these factors, we can identify critical intervention points, promote sustainable production and consumption patterns, and implement effective strategies to mitigate plastic pollution.

This session aims to:

  • Introduce and elucidate the concept of Life Cycle Thinking (LCT) and its significance in mitigating the environmental impacts of plastic products throughout their life cycle.
  • Demonstrate how Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and other life-cycle approaches can inform national policy recommendations aimed at reducing plastic pollution and promoting sustainability.
  • Showcase case studies on managing and reducing single-use plastic products, highlighting successful LCA applications and sustainable alternatives.
