Alvaro Zurita is a mechanical engineer with a focus on environmental science, leading the “Marine Litter Prevention through Reduction, Sustainable Design and Recycling of Plastic Packaging (MA-RE-DESIGN) in Thailand” project. With over two decades of experience in waste management, Alvaro joined GIZ in 2004, working on projects in Chile, including the incorporation of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) into Chilean waste management law. He has also managed projects on climate-friendly technologies at GIZ HQ in Germany, led a waste-to-energy initiative in Mexico, and was the team leader for the EU- and Germany-funded “Rethinking Plastics-Circular Economy Solutions to Marine Litter” project in East- and Southeast Asia.
